Mark Fisher
Nowhere Fast

The music critic Simon Reynolds has pointed out that, in the current moment, everyday life has sped up, but culture has slowed down. This talk will examine this seeming paradox. On the one hand, we are subject to an inundation of stimuli - a blitzing of the nervous system, producing a permanent sense of anxiety, inability to settle, digital twitch. On the other hand, cultural production seems to be increasingly sterile and stagnant, locked into an apparently interminable pattern on unacknowledged and unconscious repetition. This is only a paradox at first glance. Actually, there is a relation between the two: the overloading of the social brain means that there is no time in which the new can emerge. Is there a way out of this condition of going nowhere fast?”

(Vortrag und Diskussion in englischer Sprache.)

MARK FISHER ist Autor von Capitalist Realism. Is There No Alternative? (2009, dt. 2013) und Ghost Of My Life. Writings on Depression, Hauntology and Lost Futures (2014).
