A vibrant civil society requires different groups pursuing different interests. However, not all kinds of civic action can be seen as constructive for civil society. Whenever confronted with populist movements or racist grass-root networks we ask ourselves whether and how we should explore potential ways to distinguish “constructive” from “destructive” positions and activities.

Exploring these differences together through debate is the main objective of this OpenForum. What defines the kind of activities to be repelled? Who should we interact with? Who should define the contents and the limits of citizenship?

Precisely these questions are now key in current debates about shared values in nation-states and the European Union, who are attempting to define the meaning of citizenship.

We are looking for people who have been in contact with the limits of what they deem acceptable or respectable or who have come across the topic in political or theoretical debates. We look forward to hearing different views of people coming from different backgrounds.

As a starting point, we ask you to answer the following question in a short essay: What normative criteria do you personally apply when deciding whether to work with somebody/some organisation or not?
